- Spanish painter and sculptor
- Cubist movement
- Spanish Civil War
- Creation of cubism
- Beginning of abstract art
- Representation of figures by using several viewpoints
- Synthetic cubism
- Modern Art
- Cubism- use of simple geometrical shapes

Dimension - Shape - Line- Form – Figure

Shape
- the outer form of something
Form - something comes together in particular form and line
Dimension - size of something
Figure - a shape of a person
Line - straight, horizontal, vertical, curved

* Straight lines, horizontal and vertical - form shapes
* Spaces between lines form figures and forms
* Some lines are darker and sharper, and some lines are more soft and light

LINE - SHAPE - FORM - FIGURE - DIMENSION

Lines are used to represent straight objects
• When lines get together, they can make shapes
• Shape is an area enclosed by a line. Each shape and line have dimensions: height and width.
• There are many different kinds of geometric shapes: circles, squares, and triangles. Some of them have straight edges and angles. Line is also a geometric shape. Organic shapes have irregular and curvilinear lines.
• Shape is usually 2-dimensional
• Form is usually 3- dimensional

Picasso said he paints objects as he thinks of them, not as he sees them

-Transition from reality to abstraction

-Dark and light shades

-Many sharp and edgy geometric shapes

-Figures are analyzed in terms of their shapes

-Some shapes are closer together, some of them are further apart

Picasso's Paintings

"Three Musicians" -
figures are broken down into geometric shapes

Three Musicians
is an example of Picasso's Cubist style. In Cubism, the subject of the artwork is transformed into a sequence of planes, lines, and arcs. Cubism has been described as an intellectual style because the artists analyzed the shapes of their subjects and reinvented them on the canvas. The viewer must reconstruct the subject and space of the work by comparing the different shapes and forms to determine what each one represents. Through this process, the viewer participates with the artist in making the artwork make sense.

Picasso used shapes to depict human bodies

It's a portrait of Pablo Picasso. He is represented by different geometrical shapes which form his figure.
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
He had a very long and interesting life. So these long lines on the picture represent his years of life, wrinkles on his face.
When I look at his portrait, I see his paintings, his styles, geometrical shapes and figures.
